Here's an update -- nothing too fancy here.
Louisa finished her EEG and they didn't see any seizure activity. Her episodes of agitation stopped a few days ago on their own and she seemed to be back to normal. She's had 2 episodes with some weird eye movement things that the neurologists are considering. At this point, she may have another EEG in her future. Not sure about that yet.
Our other unfortunate report is that she had blood in her stool again yesterday morning. It's as if Louisa heard them say that there was a chance she could go home over the weekend... And she figured out a way to bleed. It did coincide again with getting her feeds up to full strength. We were especially frustrated since we thought we fixed that problem with the aortic arch repair. They consulted the surgeons and GI and they agree this likely is just a kid with an especially sensitive belly. Her oxygen levels are likely just still too low to give the gut what it needs in order to digest properly. It might not have had enough recovery time and we'll just have to go slower.
Slower... sloooowwer... slooooooowwwwwwerrrrrrrr. Can we go any slower? Today marks 5 weeks since we were admitted. We've celebrated Easter here, Mother's Day, our anniversary, and it's looking pretty sure Memorial Day too. You know you're in trouble when you go from marking the days, to marking the weeks, and then marking the holidays!
Her irritability has improved, but ours has worsened. Yesterday was a new low. The other day we saw a strange sight here -- a man who had to be in his 70s (at least) being wheeled by a team of people in his hospital bed from Mott to the main hospital. I'm not sure why an old man was at the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital -- who knows. But, I couldn't help but wonder if that old man had been hospitalized at Mott for 70+ years and someone finally realized he was too old for this place and they shipped him to the main hospital. What if that happened to Louisa?! What if she ends up living here forever? Sometimes it feels like that's a real possibility. She just can't get better.
She probably will get better. Someday we'll probably look back on this, shudder slightly and praise God for how far we've come. We just have to go SLOWER. SLOWER! I hate slower.
Praying God will give you MORE grace through the wait.
